“Passage” Sculpture Welcomes Commuters at Union Square Station

The MBTA has completed the installation of Passage, a striking new 3D sculpture by local artist Matt Trimble, at the Union Square Station entry.

The piece serves as both a physical and symbolic gateway—an asymmetrical arch that responds to the movement of people entering and exiting the station. Its wedge-shaped form presents two faces: one aligned with visitors arriving from the plaza, and the other with those coming from the train.

As Trimble describes, “The project is a celebration of travel and the space that exists between modes of transportation and their territories in the city.” Passage invites connection and reflection, capturing the dynamic energy of Union Square’s evolving public realm.
